How to Care for Cut Polished Marble

Marble is a natural stone that is a popular choice for household surfaces because of its durability and scratch-resistant properties. Marble is commonly used as a countertop surface, but can also be used as a shower surround or flooring. Proper maintenance is the key to keeping your marble pristine for the life of your home. You can properly maintain your marble using a little elbow grease and a variety of items you probably already have in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray bottle
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Mild dish detergent
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda
  • Toothbrush
  • Crushed chalk
  • Chamois

Instructions

  1. General Cleaning

    • 1

      Place two to three drops of a mild dish detergent into a plastic spray bottle filled with water. Shake the bottle to mix them together.

      Spray the water and soap mixture onto the surface of your marble.

      Wipe the surface with a lint-free cloth until it is completely dry.

    Stain Removal

      Mix together 1 gallon of water with 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide.

      Place baking soda directly on the stains.

      Apply a small amount of the hydrogen peroxide mixture onto the baking soda. Use a toothbrush to gently clean the stained surfaces, working it in small circles.

      Rinse the area thoroughly with clean water and dry it with a lint-free cloth.

    Polishing

      Mix together 3 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 quart of water.

      Wipe your marble surface with the baking soda and water mixture and allow it to dry. This will take approximately one hour.

      Dip a damp rag into crushed chalk and slowly wipe the marble with it using a circular motion.

      Rinse the area thoroughly with clean water and dry it with a chamois to give it a streak-free shine.
