How to Protect a Mattress for Storage

Mattresses don't come cheap, so if you have to put yours in storage, it is important to protect it properly. Whether you will need to store it for a few weeks or a few years, protection is key in keeping the mattress in good shape. If stored improperly, mattresses can lose their form, become infested with bugs and even get moldy. Take preventative measures so your mattress comes out of storage in the same shape it went in.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner with brush attachment
  • Antibacterial wipes
  • Waterproof mattress protector
  • Sheet of plywood

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the mattress thoroughly before storing. Use a soft brush attachment to thoroughly vacuum the front side, then flip it over and vacuum the back. This will get rid of any dust, dirt and other grime that may be lurking in the mattress.

    • 2

Wipe down both sides of the mattress with antibacterial wipes. Start at the top and make long, even strokes to the bottom, using a clean wipe as needed, until you've wiped down the entire mattress. This will disinfect the mattress and kill any bacteria that may be on the surface. Stand the mattress up against a wall and let it dry completely.

    • 3

Cover the mattress with a waterproof mattress protector to keep any moisture from getting into the fabric. Close up the mattress protector to keep out dirt and bugs. Refer to the packaging on the mattress protector for specific closing instructions.

    • 4

Store the mattress off the floor and on a sheet of plywood or similar wood to elevate it. Put the mattress into the storage space so it is not leaning against a wall. The mattress must be standing straight to maintain its form. Secure the mattress between heavy pieces of furniture like bookshelves or dressers.
