How to Keep Your Mattress Dry

Mattresses are big, heavy and expensive. They're not something you can replace whenever they get wet or soiled. What's worse, if your mattress continually gets wet, it may grow mold or mildew that aggravates asthma and other medical conditions. If you suffer from incontinence, have bed-wetting children or just worry about spills, there are several products you can use to waterproof your mattress and keep it dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Strip all linens from the bed, including sheets, blankets and pillows.

    • 2

Encase the mattress in a waterproof mattress cover.

    • 3

Put your fitted sheet back on the bed or replace it with a waterproof sheet.

    • 4

Place an absorbent, medical-grade pad on top of the fitted sheet, right where the person who may wet the bed sleeps. The pad will absorb much of the liquid and keep you from having to change your sheets as often.

    • 5

Place pillows in water-resistant, zip-on pillow protectors. Place the pillows back inside their regular pillowcases to improve comfort.

    • 6

Place a water-resistant top sheet on top of the absorbent pad. Use your regular top sheet if the moisture problem isn't severe enough to warrant waterproof sheets.

    • 7

Make your bed as usual with the rest of your linens and bedding.
