How to Take Care of Wood

Different woods, including teak, oak, mahogany, walnut and cherry, are used in many ways in the construction of homes. This includes anything from furniture to decks, flooring and cutting boards. However, while wood appears hardy and may seem to require very little maintenance, untreated wood is actually very porous and becomes damaged or even warps if it's not taken care of properly. Treating your wood well helps to keep the wood looking good for a long time to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Humidifier
  • Clean cloth(s)
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Sponge(s)
  • Broom
  • Wood polish
  • Wood sealant
  • Mayonnaise or toothpaste

Instructions

    • 1

Use a humidifier set on "Low" in rooms with prominent wood features during periods of low moisture in the air, such as wintertime. This helps to keep the humidity of the area at approximately 25 percent, which prevents wood from getting so dry that it cracks.

    • 2

Keep wood out of direct sunlight, as this can cause it to dull or even change shades entirely. Apply a weatherproofing treatment on outdoor furniture items to help protect the wood from the effects of the sun (and other environmental factors).

    • 3

Clean wood with a damp cloth with a few drops of dishwashing liquid as necessary. Do not saturate the wood, as this may cause damage. Dry the wood thoroughly with a soft cloth after any exposure to moisture.

    • 4

Apply a small amount of mayonnaise or toothpaste to marks or scratches on wood. Let the substance dry and then clean it off with a soft, damp cloth.

    • 5

Dust wood frequently and apply a wood furniture polish to wood items inside the home on a regular basis to help maintain shine.

    • 6

Sweep wood floors frequently to keep them clean. Consider adding a sealant to untreated wood floors to protect against staining and other damage. Mop wood floors with a microfiber cloth, using water and a wood cleaner as needed.
