How to Eliminate Tempur-Pedic Odor

The original purpose of the unique Tempur-Pedic material was to support NASA astronauts during shuttle launches of the late 1970s. This unique material responded to body heat and allowed even, secure weight distribution; important features when you're hurtling toward the stratosphere. As of 2011, Tempur-Pedic manufactures a wide variety of mattresses, pillows and plush mattress toppers. Like all products containing polyurethane-based materials, the Tempur-Pedic manufacturing process requires tight compression, leaving the product with a temporary, but strong, chemical odor.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the product cover. The chemical odor exists inside the Tempur-Pedic foam; removing the cover exposes the material to circulating air and helps eliminate the odor. Hang the cover outside or near an open window. Replace the cover after eliminating the odor to protect against allergens and mites.

    • 2

Turn up the heat in your bedroom to at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Warm air softens and loosens the Tempur-Pedic material, releasing the stored chemical odor.

    • 3

Break in your bed. Move around on your Tempur-Pedic product as you would if you were sleeping. Supporting weight while resisting movement requires very dense material. This density also causes the material to securely store the chemical odor. Manipulating the product with your body weight forces the material's cells to expand and contract, as though breathing, and slowly release the odor.
