How to Prevent Burnt Grease in an Oven

You normally smell burnt grease before you see it, and by then it's too late to stop the damage to your oven. Cleaning burnt grease and food spills from inside the oven is one of the most unpleasant household chores. As food heats within the oven it can bubble up and overflow the cooking pan, or meat may splatter grease as it cooks. Preventing grease splatter and oozing food spills from occurring will keep oven stains to a minimum.

Instructions

    • 1

Place an aluminum foil tent over meat dishes, such as meatloaf, to keep the grease from splattering in an oven. The foil fits loosely over the meat to allow heat and steam to cook the dish, but keeps the grease from releasing into the oven.

    • 2

Place casserole dishes on foil-lined cookie sheets before putting them in the oven to keep any spillage from running out and falling to the bottom. The aluminum foil makes cleanup easier.

    • 3

Place a large, foil-lined cookie sheet length-wise on the bottom oven rack. Set large cooking dishes on the next rack up. For large cooking dishes that will not fit into a cookie sheet, the bottom pan catches grease or food run-off before it reaches the oven floor.
