Homemade Microwave Oven Cleaner

Baking, roasting and heating can take their toll on your microwave over time. It can become stained, and food residue can accumulate. Returning the microwave to a pristine state doesn't require any expensive cleaning agents. Homemade products are effective, simple to make, environmentally friendly and inexpensive.
  1. Vinegar

    • Make a mixture of water and vinegar in a one-to-one ratio, and heat it in the microwave for three to five minutes. The steam will penetrate the food residue, allowing you to easily wipe the oven clean. Moreover, the acetic acid in the vinegar will deodorize and sanitize the oven.

    Lemon Slices

    • Place some slices of lemon in a microwave-safe bowl, and add a cup of water. Heat the bowl for four to five minutes in the microwave. Let the solution sit in the microwave for about three minutes, with the door closed. The steam will loosen the residue, and the citrus acid will cut through the grease. The lemon is also an anti-bacterial agent. Wipe the microwave clean.

    Baking Soda

    • Dissolve 1 cup baking soda in a bucket of warm water, and use this mixture and a sponge or cloth to clean the microwave. Alternatively, sprinkle a few teaspoons of baking soda inside the microwave, dip a sponge in warm water, and clean the interior. After you've wiped the microwave clean, mix 3/4 cup water with 1/4 cup baking soda in a microwave-safe container. Place it in the microwave, and bring it to a boil. Turn off the microwave, and let the mixture sit for a couple of minutes. This will clean and deodorize the microwave.

    Vinegar, Baking Soda and Water

    • Dilute baking soda in one part water and two parts vinegar. Use the solution to wipe the inside of the microwave. To make a cleaning paste, mix equal parts vinegar and water, and add baking soda. It should be slightly runny. Wipe the interior of the microwave clean. The solution will also deodorize and sanitize the appliance.
