How to Clean the Sole Plate on an Iron

Ironing clothing is meant to make them look better, not worse. A dirty iron can leave behind tough-to-remove residual starch and dirt, making clothing look worse than when you started. Eliminating the dirt and residue on your iron's sole plate is an important part in allowing it to do its intended job. Cleaning it up is a simple endeavor that's well worth the time.

    • 2

Wipe the sole plate with a damp cloth to remove any soapy residual.

    • 3

Heat 1/2 cup of white vinegar in a saucepan with 1 tsp. of table salt until it is hot.

    • 4

Dip a sponge into the hot vinegar solution and wipe areas on the sole plate that look burned. Rinse the sole plate with a damp cloth to remove residual salt once the burn mark is gone.

    • 5

Wipe away greasy residue that may be on your iron's sole plate with a sponge dipped in ammonia.

    • 6

Plug the iron in and turn it on to heat up and soften any melted plastic or other materials that may have become stuck on your iron's sole plate. Scrape them off once softened with a wooden utensil.
