The Directions for a GE Electric Self-cleaning Oven

Using the self clean feature on your GE oven turns the food messes inside the oven to nothing more than ash, making cleaning practically effortless. The oven heats to a temperature of nearly 900 degrees Fahrenheit for three to five hours, burning the accidental spills from the floor of the oven. The self-cleaning feature of a GE oven leaves you free to tend to other projects. A self-cleaning oven has more insulation than its counterparts, letting you operate the cleaning feature without abnormally raising the temperature in the kitchen, as well as your electric bill.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a kitchen window or turn on your kitchen ventilation system. Remove all equipment from inside your oven, including broiler pans, grids and any foreign items, such as aluminum foil. If your GE oven has oven rocks, they need to be removed.

    • 2

Clean the oven door with gentle liquid detergent and a scrubber sponge. Scrub around the outer edges of the oven opening next to the gasket. Do not scrub the gasket around the oven door or the oven opening.

    • 3

Close and latch the oven door. Some GE oven doors automatically lock once the cleaning cycle has begun and do not have manual latches. Turn off the surface burners on a GE electric range.

    • 4

Press the "Self Clean" button on the GE electric oven control panel. Set the cleaning time with the plus or minus buttons or use the number pad on some models. The cleaning cycle has a default time of four hours, but you can increase or decrease the time anywhere from three to five hours.

    • 5

Press the "Start/On" button on the control pad to start the GE electric oven cleaning cycle. The oven door automatically locks during the cleaning cycle. The oven does not unlock until the cleaning cycle is complete and the oven has cooled.

    • 6

Press the "Delayed Start" button on the control panel on GE oven models that offer you the option to delay the start of the cleaning cycle on your oven. Ensure your clock time is correct, then set the time to start the cleaning cycle.

    • 7

Wipe the white ash residue from inside the oven once the cleaning cycle completes and the oven cools. Use a soap-filled steel wool scouring pad or a scrubber sponge and soapy water to clean any remaining white spots from inside the oven.

    • 8

Rinse the oven after cleaning with half water and half white vinegar. Dry the inside of the oven thoroughly with paper towels.

    • 9

Replace the broiler pans and grids inside the oven.
