How to Clean a Sticky Cast Iron Skillet

Cleaning a cast-iron skillet is tricky; while you want to remove caked-on food, it is also important to limit washing to avoid removing the seasoning the skillet naturally collects. Cast-iron skillets are ideal for cooking due to their ability to absorb cooking oil, which adds flavor to your food. Coarse salt is a natural cleaning product that lifts sticky stains from the skillet's surface, and is safer to use than harsh dishwashing liquids.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 2 tsp. of coarse salt into the cast-iron skillet, and scrub the salt onto the sticky area of the skillet in a circular motion.

    • 2

Wash off the skillet's surface with hot water. Wipe up excess moisture with a paper towel or soft cleaning cloth.

    • 3

Pour 1 tbsp. of vegetable oil into the skillet, and evenly distribute the oil over the entire surface of the skillet.

    • 4

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and insert the skillet in the oven for one hour. The heat from the oven restores the non-stick surface to the skillet.

    • 5

Remove the skillet from the oven with an oven mitt. Place the skillet on top of the stove until it cools.
