Mineral Oil Uses

Mineral oil, also known as paraffin oil, is a byproduct of petroleum. It is clear and odorless, and because it is made in large quantities, mineral oil is relatively cheap. Its low cost and wide availability make mineral oil pervasive; it is found in everything from cosmetics to medicine. Mineral oil also has many applications around the home and is a product any household should have.
  1. Makeup Remover

    • Mineral oil removes makeup with ease because it has the ability to cut through grease and dirt that has accumulated over the day. Simply apply the mineral oil to a washcloth and scrub away. Keep in mind, however, that you may want to dedicate a washcloth for this use; as mineral oil is insoluble in water, it can be difficult to clean off. Apart from personal use, mineral oil is often used in lotions and cosmetics.

    On Wood and Leather

    • Using mineral oil on wood traps moisture in the wood, giving it a polished, fresh look. Applying mineral oil to wood also helps ease the appearance of damage to the wood. Apply the mineral oil to the wood with a soft cloth, leave it on for several hours and then wipe off. The same can be done with leather products.

    As a Cleaner

    • If you have stoves, stainless steel sinks or appliances, or other surfaces that tend to collect grease and dirt, try using mineral oil to remove them. Mineral oil cuts through the grease and dirt and lifts them from the surface, which allows for easy removal and leaves a bright, clean shine. You can also use mineral oil as a lubricant for squeaky doors and cabinets or as a protective layer of butcher's blocks or wooden cutting boards.

    Medical

    • Mineral oil is common in many laxatives and skin lotions. Baby oil, which is mineral oil mixed with a fragrance, is often prescribed to ease the itch and pain of diaper rash in babies. Mineral oil can also be taken as a laxative. Once taken, it coats the bowels, positioning stool and easing bowel movement. However, it is advisable to consult a doctor before using mineral oil.
