How to Make Your Fridge Smell Better

Trapped within the confines of your refrigerator, odors from food have little place to escape and dissipate. Opening your fridge can become an overwhelming sensation, especially when food has been in there a little too long or mildew and mold have accumulated, leaving your refrigerator smelling foul. Taking some time out of your day to dedicate to the unpleasant, yet necessary, chore of cleaning your refrigerator will leave it smelling much better.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill an ice chest or towel-lined cardboard box with ice and set it near the refrigerator.

    • 2

Take everything out of the refrigerator and inspect it. Items that you plan on keeping can be placed in the box to be kept cool, and old leftovers and expired condiments and other items should be discarded. Inspect caps and lids to ensure that nothing is leaking. Leaks and spills can often contribute to unpleasant refrigerator smells.

    • 3

Wipe up spills with a clean damp sponge or cloth. Sprinkle baking soda onto tough stains before cleaning them so the mild abrasiveness can help to cut through the stain.

    • 4

Remove mold and mildew with a sponge dipped in soapy water. Once the mildew or mold has been removed, sanitize the area with a solution of 2 tbsp. of chlorine bleach in 1 qt. of warm water.

    • 5

Mix 1 tbsp. of baking soda into 1 qt. of warm water.

    • 6

Wipe down the inside of the refrigerator with the baking soda solution.

    • 7

Leave the door open for 15 minutes to allow it to air dry.

    • 8

Wash the shelves that you took out and set them aside to air dry as well.

    • 9

Place the shelves back in the refrigerator, along with the food, once it is dry inside.
