How to Clean a BBQ Grill Grate

Whether your barbecue grill is gas or charcoal, keeping it clean is important in maintaining food safety and flavor. Dirty BBQ grill grates can leave the burned remnants of food behind, and the dirty ashes will transfer to the newly cooked food. Bacteria can build up on the grates as well, increasing the chances of food-borne illness. Clean your grill grate before each use to keep it in good condition and maintain your food's flavor.

Instructions

    • 1

Heat the grill on high heat for 5 minutes with the lid closed.

    • 2

Open the grill lid and scrub the grate with a long-handled grill brush. Scrape away any large food pieces and make sure to clean between the grates.

    • 3

Dip a paper towel in cooking oil to barely dampen it and then ball it up.

    • 4

Pick up the paper towel ball with tongs and rub it quickly along the top of the grill grate to oil it. This protects the grill grates and prevents sticking.
