How to Clean My Stove Fan

Stove hoods and fans remove the grease and moisture that rise in the steam produced when cooking. They also eliminate strong food odors and smoke. Over time, the fan may need a deep cleaning: The combination of grease, steam, dust and smoke can build up on the fan, causing it to lose its efficiency. Fortunately, the fan is cleanable and as long as it is mechanically sound, there is no need to replace it. Simply treat it to a deep cleaning and re-install.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the stove.

    • 2

Put on rubber gloves and fill a sink with hot water. Add a few drops of dish soap to make the water sudsy.

    • 3

Remove the range filters and immerse them into the water. Allow them to sit while you clean the fan.

    • 4

Lay newspaper over the floor or on a table. Follow the stove manufacturer's instructions to uninstall and remove the fan and place it on the newspaper. Use the hose attachment on a vacuum to suck any dirt off the fan and clean the inside of the hood.

    • 5

Wet a rag in hot water. Squeeze the excess moisture from the rag. Wipe the fan down. Rinse the rag and use it to clean the interior of the range hood, avoiding the light bulb and bulb socket.

    • 6

Spray the fan with a nonabrasive degreaser. Wipe it down with paper towels.

    • 7

Wet a sponge in hot water and squeeze out the excess water. Scrub the fan on any trouble spots. If needed, spray with more degreaser and scrub. Use the sponge to better wipe down the inside of the hood.

    • 8

Dry the fan off with a clean, dry rag. Wipe the inside of the hood dry.

    • 9

Follow the stove manufacturer's instructions to reinstall the fan.

    • 10

Scrub the filters that you immersed in the water with a toothbrush. Remove the filters and allow them to dry. Once dry, replace them into the hood.

    • 11

Throw away the newspaper and vacuum up any dirt from the floor.
