How to Brighten Aluminum Pots

When you begin using aluminum pots for different culinary tasks, their shiny surfaces can seem almost blinding. Yet, after repeated use, the brilliant surfaces start to dull and even discolor. Anything from hard water to inappropriate cleaners can cause a change in the color of your aluminum pots. Fortunately, you can enlist the use of common household products to brighten your aluminum cookware and restore its original appearance.

  • 2 tbsp. cream of tartar
  • Gentle liquid soap

      Fill the aluminum pot with lukewarm water until it reaches about 3 inches from the top.

      Add 2 tbsp. cream of tartar per quart of water to the pot, stirring to dissolve.

      Bring the water and cream of tartar to a boil on the stove top. Boil for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and pour the water down the drain. Wash the aluminum pot with gentle liquid soap, rinse with water and dry with a clean towel.

      Repeat for any additional aluminum pots you wish to brighten.
