Carpet & Floor Cleaners

Buildings with dirty interiors can produce unhealthy environments for occupants. Areas that need regular cleaning include floors and carpets. This helps to keep them free of dirt, dust, pollen and bacteria. The tools for this cleaning job will depend on the type of floor covering; options range from brushes to rotary cleaners.
  1. Dustpan and Brush

    • This floor cleaning equipment comes in a variety of sizes and can clean hard-surface floors and short-fiber carpets. Brushes with shorter handles commonly go by the name dustpan brushes and typically retail in combination with a dustpan. These can prove effective at targeting small floor areas where a spill has occurred. For general floor cleaning over larger areas, a long handle broom can be a more convenient tool, especially when used in combination with a long handled dustpan. This style of dustpan can have an open body or a hooded body with lid, which keeps dirt enclosed.

    Floor Sweeper

    • The design of a floor sweeper includes a roller brush or blade, which sits inside a dustpan body set on wheels. The tool has a long handle to make it easy to use and when moved across a floor surface the roller picks up loose dirt and deposits it inside the dustpan. Sweepers can clean hard floor surfaces and carpets and on completion of the job the lid of the dustpan lifts to deposit the dirt in a trash can.

    Mop

    • The use of a mop enables the cleaning of a hard floor surface with water. This can more effectively remove ground-on dirt, liquid spills and general dirt and leave the floor surface in a more hygienic condition. Mops can have different head styles, with some of the options including string mops, sponge mops and microfiber pad mops. These can typically detach from the mop handle to enable changing when they wear out or become too dirty for use.

    Vacuum Cleaner

    • Most homes with carpeted floors will have a vacuum cleaner available. Electrically powered, they use suction to pick up dirt and loose debris. The come in a variety of styles from smaller hand-held devices for targeted floor cleaning, to the more traditional upright vacuum cleaners for general floor cleaning. While older styles typically included a bag to collect the dirt and dust, newer models can feature bagless designs, where the collected dirt is emptied directly from the machine. Most vacuums come with attachments in different shapes and sizes to enable them to more effectively clean different areas.

    Steam Cleaner

    • Steam cleaners use hot water or steam to more effectively clean a carpet. While they remove loose dust, they can also clean dirt, debris and stains which have become ground into the fibers of a carpet. This can produce a cleaner looking and more hygienic finish, although the process typically takes longer to complete and the carpet needs to dry out before use. For these reasons it is typically used on a less frequent basis.

    Rotary Floor Cleaner

    • A rotary floor cleaner is an electrically powered device, which features a deck and rotating pad attached to a long handle. Its uses typically include scrubbing, cleaning and buffing hard floor surfaces to produce a shine, although they can also have a use in scrubbing carpets during shampooing. This style of machine is more commonly used for cleaning floors in commercial and industrial buildings.
