Do-it-yourself Oven Cleaner Formulations

Cleaning the oven is a daunting task, but one that must be done periodically. Food spills and other grime accumulate in the oven and can produce smoke and odors. Using commercial oven cleaners is one option, but these products are toxic and dangerous to use. Instead, try making your own oven cleaning formulations with common household products. These homemade formulas are inexpensive and quick to make and easy to use.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup table salt
  • Baking soda
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Sponge
  • Scrubbing pad
  • Rags bucket
  • Liquid dish soap
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp. chlorine bleach
  • 4 tbsp. distilled white vinegar

Instructions

  1. Baking Soda and Salt

    • 1

      Pour 1 cup each of salt, baking soda and water into a bowl.

      Stir the ingredients well with a spoon to make a paste.

      Spread the paste onto the inside of the oven with a sponge. Let it sit for five minutes, and then scrub the oven with a scrubbing pad. Rinse the oven well with a rag and clean water.

    Bleach and Lemon Juice

      Fill a bucket with 1 qt. of warm water.

      Add 1 tbsp. each of liquid dish soap, lemon juice and chlorine bleach.

      Apply the mixture to the oven with a clean sponge. Leave it for an hour, then scrub with a scrubbing pad. Rinse the oven with a rag and clean water.

    Vinegar and Baking Soda

      Pour 5 tbsp. baking soda, 4 tbsp. distilled white vinegar and three drops of liquid dish soap into a bowl.

      Stir the ingredients well to make a paste.

      Apply the paste to the oven with a sponge, and then scrub away the buildup with a scrubbing pad. Rinse the oven well with a rag and clean water.
