Steps for Polishing Stainless Steel

Maintain the shiny finish of your stainless steel by giving it a routine cleaning when it becomes dull. Over time, stainless steel becomes lackluster from everyday use and needs cleaning to help restore its like-new appearance. When choosing a cleaner for your stainless steel, avoid harsh chemicals and manufactured polishes and use greener options such as olive oil or vinegar. These common household items can polish stainless steel just as well as commercial stainless steel cleaners.

Instructions

  1. Olive Oil Method

    • 1

Wash the item or fixture prior to polishing. Use a liquid soap to remove any dirt or grime from the item.

    • 2

Rinse the item or fixture to remove all the soap. Allow the item to dry completely.

    • 3

Apply the olive oil to one side of the white cloth. The cloth does not need to be soaked in the oil; however, there should be enough oil to cover the item or fixture completely.

    • 4

Apply the olive oil to the stainless steel item, being careful to get into any scratches or grooves in the stainless steel. The olive oil method may take a few minutes longer to shine the stainless steel than standard stainless steel polish, but your item or fixture will not have any harsh residues from the cleaner.

    • 5

Wipe the olive oil from the item or fixture with a clean cloth. Leaving excess olive oil may cause the item or fixture to remain dull. Once you finish wiping with the clean cloth, the item or fixture should reveal a new shine.

    Vinegar Method

    • 6

Pour undiluted vinegar into a spray bottle.

    • 7

Spray the stainless steel item with vinegar using the spray bottle.

    • 8

Rub the item with a clean white cloth until the item shines.

    • 9

Wipe away any excess vinegar using another clean cloth. Allow the item to dry completely.
