How to Clean Flour Silos

Flour silos are gigantic structures used to store thousands of pounds of flour. Due to the size and perishable items stored in them, cleaning and regular maintenance must be conducted. Insects and other pests are known to infest silos. When the silo is empty, cleaning the inside of the silo takes professional equipment. Since food items are stored in the silos, pesticides, insecticides and other toxic materials should not be used. Silos are usually cleaned twice a year.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour one-part vinegar, one-part dish detergent and ten-parts distilled water in to a container. Mix the solution.

    • 2

Pour the solution into a professional grade liquid tank. The liquid tank should hold at least five gallons of liquid.

    • 3

Screw a professional high pressure sprayer to the top of the liquid tank in a clockwise direction. The top of the liquid tank should look similar to a water faucet.

    • 4

Spray the entire interior surface of the flour silo with the solution. The pressure of the solution removes debris and other build-up from the interior surface.

    • 5

Let the solution absorb in the interior surface for six hours. The vinegar soaks into the inside of the silo killing bacteria and other contaminants.

    • 6

Fill the liquid tank with distilled water. Screw a professional high pressure sprayer to the top of the liquid tank in a clockwise direction.

    • 7

Spray the entire interior surface of the flour silo with distilled water. Distilled water removes the vinegar and dish detergent that could cause corrosion.

    • 8

Let the interior surface dry for 12 hours.
