How to Get Odor Out of a Countertop Ice Maker

A countertop ice maker is a big convenience; it has ice ready for you whenever you need it. But the constant exposure to water and lack of regular cleaning can cause mold and mildew to build up inside the appliance, making the ice it creates unusable. Cleaning your ice maker on a regular basis removes mineral deposits, hard water stains, and odor-causing mold and mildew fungus. Once you clean and deodorize the appliance, continue regular cleaning and maintenance to prevent the smelly fungus from returning.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the ice maker to avoid electrical shock during the cleaning process. Drain the water reservoir area to remove all water.

    • 2

Fill a dishpan with warm water and mix in ¼ tsp. dishwashing detergent to make a mild soapy solution. Dip a nylon dish scrubber in the soap solution and allow the excess liquid to drip back into the dishpan.

    • 3

Scrub the interior of the ice maker with the dish scrubber or a soapy cloth to remove odor-causing mildew and grime. Wipe down the exterior of the ice maker with the soap solution. Rinse the water reservoir with water to wash out the soap, and wipe the other areas off with a damp cloth.

Wet a clean cloth with white vinegar and wipe down the inside and outside surfaces to kill any remaining mold or mildew and to remove any odor from the ice maker. White vinegar naturally deodorizes surfaces. Leave the white vinegar on the surface of the ice maker for a few minutes, then dry off the appliance with a clean, dry cloth.
