How to Clean Air Conditioner Condensation Drains

When air conditioners cool the air for your home, the water from that air condenses inside your A/C unit. The condensed water has to go somewhere, which is what the air condensation drain is for. Over time algae, mold and fungus build up in the condensation drain and can clog the drain. These clogs keep your air conditioner from working. Cleaning the condensation line twice a year will keep it from getting clogged in the first place.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open the maintenance door on your air handler system. This is where the condensation drain line for your A/C unit is. Use the screwdriver to open the door if needed.

    • 2

Locate the condensation drain in the air handler unit. It will be a tube that runs from the drain pan, the pan at the bottom of the unit, out of the air handler and empties outside.

    • 3

Mix ½ cup bleach with 2 cups of water.

    • 4

Pour the bleach mixture into the drain pan and allow it to run through your air condensation drain line. Pour 2 to 3 cups of warm water into the drain pan after the bleach runs through the line.
