How to Clean the Metal Grate in an A/C Unit

Air conditioning grates, also known as grilles or fins, get clogged with dust, dirt and other debris while in use. Depending on what type of A/C unit you have, some can get dirtier than others, like those located outside. If your grates get clogged, the unit won't cool your home as well as it should. Cleaning the grates in the spring before the long, hot days of summer helps keep your unit in working condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the grates, grill or fins on your A/C unit. If it's a window unit, the grate will be on the back of the unit. If the A/C unit is a central unit, the grate will be outside with the unit's evaporator coils.

    • 2

Remove any plants or weeds from around the unit, if it's located outside. Cut back all plants to within 2 feet of the A/C unit.

    • 3

Vacuum the A/C unit's grate to remove the stuck-in dust, dirt and debris with the brush attachment. Don't push down on the grates or you could close them.

Run the fin comb through the grate gently to open any that have closed.
