How to Remove Mold From a George Foreman Grill

Originally called the "Lean, Mean, Fat-reducing Grilling Machine," what we now know as the George Foreman Grill evolved when the ex-boxer teamed with the grill maker's manufacturer, Salton, in 1994. Since then, Foreman has promoted the grills as a way to cook food with less fat. If you don't properly clean your grill before storage, it can develop mold. You must remove the mold before further use to avoid getting ill or contaminating your food.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the grill and allow it to completely cool.

    • 2

Wet a clean, nonabrasive cloth or paper towel and wipe down the grill. Ensure that you wipe all parts, not just obviously moldy areas, as early mold growth may not be visible.

    • 3

Rinse the cloth and squirt a quarter-size dollop of dish detergent on it. Rub the cloth together to create a small lather. Wipe down all parts of the grill again. Scrub hard in especially moldy areas. Rinse the cloth and reapply the detergent as necessary.

    • 4

Dip a cotton swab in dish detergent and use it to clean hard-to-reach or small crevices on the grill. This ensures that every possible area gets cleaned and mold growth is stopped.

    • 5

Wet a clean cloth or paper towel and wipe down the grill to remove the detergent. Rinse the cloth often to prevent leaving soapy buildup behind. Wet the ends of new cotton swabs and use them to clean the detergent off of small areas and crevices. Repeat the entire rinsing process at least once to fully remove the detergent residue.

    • 6

Dry the grill with soft paper towels or another clean cloth and allow it to remain out, with the lid open, to fully dry for at least an hour before storing it.

    • 7

Put any accessories -- including drip trays, spatulas or removable plates -- into the dishwasher for a full cleaning. Keep spatulas and drip trays on the top rack only. Alternatively, wash the removable parts with soapy water as you would normally wash dishes.
