How to Clean a Rusty Keyboard Switch Board

A keyboard switchboard is also known as a circuit board; like anything else, it can become dirty over time. While rust on a switchboard can mean it is no longer usable, it is always worth a shot to try and repair it. To get your switchboard working again, you must remove all the corrosion and rust from the area. If you do this properly, you can salvage your switchboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean off all visible dirt and dust from the switchboard with a can of compressed air. Spray the can over the surface of the switchboard from one side to the other. Hold the can a few inches from the switchboard and move from side to side until all visible dust is blown away.

    • 2

Unplug the switch board and make sure there are no electrical connections going to it. Pour a small amount of ethyl alcohol into a small bowl and dip a toothbrush into the alcohol. Let it soak for one minute so it can absorb as much of the alcohol as possible.

    • 3

Brush over the switch board at the rusty areas beginning on one end and working to the other. Scrub hard on the rusty areas until the rust begins to disappear, but do not press too hard to avoid damaging the keyboard.

    • 4

Dip the brush back into the alcohol when necessary and continue around the circuit board until all of the rust has been removed. Dampen a clean cloth and wipe the alcohol off of the switch board. Wring out the damp cloth before using it on your switch board to reduce the amount of water that comes in contact with the circuits.

    • 5

Wipe the board dry with another clean cloth. Fold the cloth over after it is covered with dust. Let the switch board dry for two hours before plugging it back in.

    • 6

Test out the switch board and verify that if it is working properly.
