How to Clean BBQ Rocks

Barbecue rocks, also known as lava rocks, are designed to retain heat to aid in cooking a variety of food on gas grills. Too much grease or food debris left on the lava rocks can cause flare-ups on the grill. The lava rocks will eventually need to be replaced, but you can clean them when they appear covered in grease or food. Dirty lava rocks will not heat well or they may emit too much smoke. Clean lava rocks carefully to prevent them from breaking apart.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the grilling grates once the grill has cooled completely. Set the grates off to the side.

    • 2

Flip the lava rocks over with tongs or wear gloves to prevent staining your hands. Turn the lava rocks over so that the dirtiest side faces down.

    • 3

Place a sheet of aluminum foil over the grill grate that you removed. Cover the grill grate completely with the aluminum foil to help trap the grill's heat.

    • 4

Turn the grill to the highest setting. Allow the grill to heat for 30 to 40 minutes to burn off the excess grease.

    • 5

Turn the burners off on the grill. Allow the grill to cool completely. Inspect the lava rocks carefully to make sure that they are no longer dirty. Repeat the cleaning process one more time to clean the barbecue rocks.

    • 6

Remove the aluminum foil from the grill grates. Replace the grill grates and close the lid to keep dirt and debris out of the grill.
