How to Treat Teflon

Teflon is a commercial name for the nonstick coating that is applied to cookware. While Teflon is most commonly used on frying skillets, you can also find it in cauldron-style pots, grilling grates and spatulas. Though known for its durability and resistance to heat, Teflon-coated items require special treatment to remain useable. Improper use and poor cleaning may cause the coating to flake or peel off over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your new Teflon-coated pan using warm water, mild dish soap and a soft sponge. Pat the entire item dry with a clean towel.

    • 2

Condition the Teflon surface by applying a light coat of cooking oil. Spread the oil over the cooking surface using a folded paper towel.

    • 3

Place the pan over low to medium heat before cooking with high heat. Add your food ingredients to the pan prior to preheating. Preheating protects the Teflon coating from a sudden increase in temperature.

    • 4

Use rubber or plastic mixing utensils. Avoid using metal spatulas, forks, knives or spoons with your Teflon pan, as these will scratch the cooking surface.

    • 5

Make a mixture of three tablespoons dishwasher detergent and one cup water. Pour the mixture into your pan and simmer over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes to remove stains and discoloration.

    • 6

Repeat step 1 after each use of your Teflon pan.
