Carbon Odor Removal

Carbon is a superior odor remover. Commonly sold in charcoal form, carbon is known to eliminate odors effectively, especially when activated. Charcoal is activated by forcing carbon dioxide, water vapor or chemical compounds into charred wood to create extremely porous charcoal. Activated charcoal is commonly made from coconut shells. Since the surface area of charcoal is increased by activation, it creates more room to absorb odors. According to Innofresh, the surface area of 1 gram of activated charcoal equals 500 square meters, the size of two tennis courts.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove odors from the refrigerator by filling a shallow bowl with activated carbon charcoal and placing it in the refrigerator. Leave for several days. Repeat this process until the odors are removed, refreshening the charcoal as necessary.

    • 2

Control odors in problem areas, such as bathroom, laundry room and near the cat box, by adding a shallow bowl of charcoal. Refreshen the charcoal every four days to keep it active.

    • 3

Install activated-charcoal filters in your heating and air-conditioning units. As the heating and cooling system circulates air, the charcoal filter removes odors. Change the filters on the same schedule as you would regular filters.

    • 4

Refreshen your charcoal by placing it on a metal oven pan and heating in a 300-degree-Fahrenheit oven for one hour. This burns off previously absorbed odors and makes the carbon charcoal ready for future use.
