How to Get the Stink Out of Your Microwave

Microwaves can quickly develop an unpleasant odor that can stink up your whole house and affect the taste of other foods cooked in the microwave. Furthermore, the nose-wrinkling odor will last for weeks after you have cooked the offending food. Fortunately, several natural and common items will eliminate the odor instead of simply masking it. These items are inexpensive and will thoroughly clean the microwave without toxic chemicals.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a clean, microwave-safe bowl with white vinegar. Alternatively, mix 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of lemon juice in the microwave-safe bowl.

    • 2

Put the vinegar-filled bowl inside the microwave and close the door. Cook the vinegar for five minutes on high. The vinegar will remove odors and loosen food, grease and grime from the microwave walls.

    • 3

Remove the bowl from the microwave and wipe the inside of the microwave clean with a vinegar-soaked sponge.

    • 4

Dampen a clean cloth in cool water and rinse the vinegar off the inside of the microwave. Dry the microwave with a lint-free cloth.

    • 5

Repeat the process until the odor is no longer present.
