How to Clean and Disinfect a Dishwasher

Regularly cleaning dishwashers will remove discolorations, odors, and mold or mildew. Bacteria often linger inside the dishwasher when food particles rest inside the appliance, which can result in unpleasant odors. Instead of purchasing an expensive dishwasher cleaner, you can clean the appliance with items you probably already have around the home. Clean and sanitize the dishwasher every two weeks to a month for best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all dishes from the dishwasher. Remove the top and bottom racks, and set them aside.

    • 2

Wipe food debris from the drain with a sponge. Remove debris from the filter if the dishwasher has one.

    • 3

Fill a bucket with hot water. Add a few drops of mild dish detergent. Dip a soft-bristled cleaning brush into the water.

    • 4

Scrub the interior of the dishwasher. Focus on the rubber seals, grooves and crevices.

    • 5

Dip a washcloth or sponge into the soapy water. Wipe under the dishwasher door and around the hinges. Wipe away any debris that you loosened with the brush. Rinse the washcloth in the soapy water as needed.

    • 6

Wipe the blades with the washcloth. Remove food debris from the blades with a sponge or brush.

    • 7

Add 2 cups of white distilled vinegar to a dishwasher-safe, glass measuring cup. Put the cup in the dishwasher, and set the appliance to the hottest water setting. The vinegar will remove any lingering odors from the dishwasher.

    • 8

Pour bleach into the detergent compartment of the dishwasher. Set the dishwasher to the hottest water setting, and allow it to complete a full cycle.

    • 9

Wash the dishwasher racks with liquid dish detergent and hot water. Replace the racks inside the dishwasher.

    • 10

Run the dishwasher through a cycle with detergent but without any dishes. Wipe the inside of the dishwasher with a towel or washcloth.
