How to Clean an Electrostatic Air-Conditioning Filter

Electrostatic air-conditioning filters create a static charge when air flows through them. The charge causes dirt, dust and other particles from the air to stick to the filter. When particles build up and clog the filter, they can restrict air flow and reduce the air conditioner's performance. Most electrostatic air-conditioning filters are washable and require monthly maintenance to keep them performing their best.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum, with soft brush attachment
  • All-purpose cleaning spray
  • Small rock (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the air conditioner, then remove the electrostatic air filter from its housing.

    • 2

Vacuum dirt and debris from the filter using a soft brush attachment. Use gentle pressure and run the brush along both sides of the filter.

    • 3

Spray the filter thoroughly with all-purpose cleaner on both sides.

    • 4

Lay the filter outside or in a tub with the dirtiest side facing down. Place a small rock under the edge of the filter to prop it up enough for the water to flow away while rinsing. You can also lean the filter against a wall or object. Spray the filter with cool water. Use a hose or sprayer with high pressure to wash out debris and cleaning solution. Turn the filter over and rinse the other side. Repeat rinsing on both sides until the water runs clear.

    • 5

Shake the filter to remove any excess water. Place the filter in a well-ventilated area to air dry. This can take several hours to overnight.

    • 6

Place the dry filter back into its housing. Make sure the filter is in proper position according to the label.
