The Best Ways to Clean a Gas Grill Cover

With the right care, the cover to a gas grill stays clean and new for many cookout seasons. Whether lighting up the grill for a special occasion or just a family meal, the end of the occasion ends with cleanup time. While the inside needs careful cleaning to ensure food safety, the outside and cover also require attention to prevent a buildup of grease, dirt and environmental debris.
  1. Soap and Water

    • Often the best solution for cleaning the cover of a gas grill is dish soap and water. Mix a couple of squirts of the soap into a bucket, and add water to create a bucket of suds. Go ahead and spray the top with a garden hose, or wet it with a bucket of clear water. Using a rag or clean cloth, wash the top of the grill. Rinsing and re-dipping the rag several times will ensure you are cleaning with clean water. Spray with a hose to rinse, or use clean water from a bucket or other source. Always ensure the grill is cool and the gas control is in the off position.

    Degreasers

    • Commercial degreasers are available for cleaning a gas grill cover. Products sold specifically to clean stovetops and countertops also clean grill tops. Read the directions carefully, and ensure the grill is cool before applying. Some of these products come in foaming formulas and need time to sit for maximum cleaning. Test any product on a back corner of the lid before applying it to the entire area. Rinse thoroughly with clear water. Some products may be hazardous and will require the use of gloves for application.

    Scrubbing

    • Often the key to cleaning any item is a little labor. As far as gas grill lids are concerned, one of the best ways to clean them may be scrubbing off the unwanted grease and dirt. Many gas grills, however, will not stand up to scouring pads. These will scratch or scar the finish and may cause permanent damage to the grill. Choose a soft, natural-bristle brush for the job. Clean in a circular motion with a selected cleaner or just water. Do not press hard. Concentrate on areas of grease or heavy dirt, and rinse with clear water to finish.

    Prevention

    • The best way to clean a gas grill lid may be to not get it dirty to begin with. While keeping it completely clean between uses may be impossible, there are ways to prevent excessive dirt and debris from collecting. Invest in a cover made to fit the particular model of grill. The better the fit of the cover, the less dirt and debris will get in. Keep the cover on whenever the grill is not in use. Clean the grill lid after each use, whether or not it appears greasy or dirty. Even the smallest amount of grease will attract and hold dirt and dust and will buildup over time.
