How to Polish VCT

VCT, or vinyl composition tile, is a premium flooring tile product that has a smooth, gleaming appearance. With time, VCT can become dirty and lose its luster from the foot traffic going over it. Polishing the VCT will remove soiling, buff scratches and restore shine. Because of its smooth texture, the VCT floor will become slippery when cleaned and polished. Give the floor time enough to dry before letting people walk on it. To hasten the drying time, raise the temperature of the room or turn on the ceiling fans.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the area covered by the VCT tiles with a dust mop.

    • 2

Apply a VCT stripper solution to the floor. Allow 15 minutes for the cleaning solution to act on any tough stains on the VCT.

    • 3

Scrub the floor vigorously using a scrubber and a stripping pad. Rinse the stripped floor with a mop and clean water in a bucket. Allow the floor to dry.

    • 4

Apply the first coat of a VCT sealer, such as Atomic Top Coat, with an acetone-resistant pump sprayer. Make sure the coat is 1/8-inch thick, or cover 500 square feet of floor with 1 gallon of the top coat. Allow 45 minutes for the coat to dry before applying the second coat in a similar manner. Let the two coats dry for two hours before walking on the floor.
