How to Clean Burnt Sugar

The sweet taste of sugar can be counteracted by the sour feeling of having to clean burnt sugar stains. Sugar caramelizes when it is exposed to heat in sauce pans, pots and ovens. Caramelization occurs when sugar becomes slightly singed, creating a rich, dark color. Cleaning burnt sugar from surfaces can be a challenge when it has adhered to the material. Fortunately, sugar is a water-soluble substance that can be removed from cooking utensils and countertops using household items.

The burnt sugar should warm in the simmering water and melt away from the sides and bottom.
