Glass-Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner That Can Be Made at Home

Glass-ceramic cooktops, while visibly appealing, need special care to keep them from scratching. Scratches on a cooktop may result in a lower-quality cooking performance, so it's best to keep them at a minimum. While there are products on the market that will effectively clean a glass-ceramic cooktop, there are several ways to make a cleaner at home at a minimal cost.
  1. Baking Soda

    • Mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda and enough water to create a thick paste and apply it to hard-to-clean areas of your glass-ceramic cooktop. Apply the paste using a soft sponge or cloth and allow it to sit for five to 10 minutes. Remove the paste using a freshly rinsed sponge or cloth. Make sure to remove all the paste and then dry thoroughly using a paper towel or a dry cloth. The baking soda will break down the components of anything stuck to the glass cooktop so it can be easily removed without damaging the surface.

    White Vinegar

    • A combination of water, white vinegar and rubbing alcohol will clean a glass-ceramic cooktop without leaving undue grease or streaks in the glass. This combination isn't abrasive, so it won't harm the material in the cooktop. To make this cleaner, pour 2 cups of white vinegar, 2 cups of water and 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle. Put on the lid and shake the contents well. Spray the cleaner on the cooktop, paying particular attention to areas with stuck-on food or grease. Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes before wiping it off with a clean cloth or sponge. Dry the area completely using a paper towel or a dry cloth.

    Scratch Removers

    • You can remove scratches from glass-ceramic cooktops by applying a small amount of white toothpaste to the scratches and gently rubbing it in with a soft cloth. Remove the toothpaste with a dry cloth and then polish dry. You may need to repeat these steps with deep scratches. You also can use a mixture of equal parts lemon juice and vegetable oil. Rub into the scratches with a soft cloth and then wipe clean.

    Considerations

    • Before using any type of cleaner, make sure the cooktop is completely cool. Never use ammonia or bleach to clean a glass-ceramic cooktop as it could cause dangerous fumes and ruin the cooktop. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which can leave scratches on the cooktop. Also avoid abrasive cleaning utensils. To make the cleaning job easier, wipe up any spills as soon as they happen with the proper tools and cleaners.
