My Kenmore Vacuum Is Clogged

Kenmore vacuum cleaners are bagless with a four-position height adjustment, LED headlight, dust cup, long telescoping wand and a direct drive agitator that does not require the use of a belt. The vacuum cleaners are sold in Sears department stores, as well as online and other home retail or appliance stores. If the vacuum clogs, the problem is likely fairly simple to solve.
  1. Hoses

    • When vacuuming with the Kenmore vacuum cleaner, the vacuum can accidentally suck up small items that get lodged in the hoses, creating a clog. Disconnect power to the vacuum cleaner and then turn the extension hose release lever, located on the bottom rear of the unit, counterclockwise to release. Turn the hose collar slightly while pulling it straight up to remove the lower end of the extension hose. Reconnect power to the vacuum and turn it on, which should help suction the clog out of the hose. While it is working, stretch out the hose to the full length and then release it. Turn the vacuum back off and re-insert the hose back into the vacuum cleaner and push down to secure. Turn the hose release lever clockwise to lock it into position.

    Dust Cup

    • If the dust cup gets too full or something lodges itself in the cup, the vacuum cleaner will lose suction. Push the release button on the side of the cup while turning the top of the cup counterclockwise. Lift off the lid and empty out the cup in a waste bin. Look under the lid for any debris that needs to be cleaned and removed. Line up the slot on the lid with the slot on the dust cup and turn the lid clockwise until it clicks into place. The dust cup has a long slot that lines up with the slot on the lid.

    Agitator

    • Another place where clogs can occur is the agitator brush, which can get slowed or caught by long fibers, strings or hair that are picked up during cleaning. Disconnect the vacuum power and turn the vacuum over before using scissors to carefully cut away any items caught in the agitator.

    Pre-Filter

    • Remove the dust cup from the vacuum cleaner and remove the pre-filter by pulling it straight down out of the bottom of the cup. The pre-filter can get filled with dirt and debris and may reduce suction. Tap all sides of the pre-filter over a waste bin. If the debris does not fall into the waste bin, rinse the filter with cold water but do not use detergent. Set the filter aside to dry for 24 hours before re-inserting in the vacuum cleaner, but only when fully dry.
