How to Get Stains Out of an Aluminum Coffee Urn

A large aluminum coffee urn allows you to make coffee for a crowd, but after several pots of coffee, the inside of the urn becomes stained. In addition to coffee stains, white or gray stains occur from mineral deposits left by the heated water in the urn. Though coffee stains typically need less effort to clean than mineral deposits, both require similar treatments to remove without damaging the aluminum.

Instructions

    • 1

Place 2 tbsp. of cream of tartar inside the urn. Fill the urn with water, and run it through a brewing cycle, following the manufacturer's directions for your model. Do not add coffee to the urn for this brewing cycle. The cream of tartar loosens the stains and hard water deposits inside.

    • 2

Empty the water from the urn.

    • 3

Place two or three drops of a mild dish soap on a steel wool scrubbing pad.

    • 4

Scrub the interior of the urn thoroughly to remove any remaining stains inside. Rinse the urn thoroughly with clear water before using it to make coffee.
