How to Clean Burned Black Stains in Oven

Non-Self-Cleaning

  Remove the oven racks and any drip pans. Wipe them down with warm soapy water and rinse well.

  Wipe the inside of the oven with a damp sponge to remove loose debris.

  Scrape off thick pieces of burned-on food or grease, using the metal spatula.

  Spray the oven stains with ammonia and let it sit for five minutes to loosen burned stains.

  Sprinkle baking soda over the ammonia to cover the burned stain completely.

  Spray white distilled vinegar over the baking soda to cause a reaction.

  Scrub the black stains with a non-abrasive sponge or scrubbing pad.

  Rinse the oven with clean water and dry with a towel. Replace the racks and drip pans.

Self-Cleaning

  Remove any pots, pans, utensils or food from the oven.

  Run the oven's self-cleaning function. If you aren't sure how to operate this function, read the manufacturer's directions. Usually the oven will have a self-cleaning button to push.

  Lock the oven door. Above the handle on the oven door you will notice a latch to push or pull to close the door securely. This prevents anyone from opening the oven door during cleaning.

  Open the windows in your home and turn on fans to circulate the air.

  Allow the oven to complete the cycle and let it cool completely.

  Wipe down the inside of the oven with a damp sponge to remove the ash.

  Spray ammonia directly on any stains that remain. Allow the ammonia to rest for five to 10 minutes, then scrub burn stains with the non-abrasive scrubber.
