What Do You Spray on a Dust Mop After Washing It?

Ideal for cleaning hardwood and other floors without the hassle of using water, dust mops are available in a variety of sizes and styles. The mops remove dust and dirt from the flooring without scratching or damaging the floor's finish. Like wet mops, you need to clean your dust mop to remove any caked-on debris. It is also important to treat your dust mop with a substance to prolong its life.
  1. Spray Treatment

    • After cleaning your dust mop in your home's washing machine or by hand in a sink, spray it with a dust mop treatment chemical and place the mop in an airtight plastic bag. Dust mop treatment chemical is found at hardware, home improvement and retail superstores. The chemical is also found at janitorial supply stores and online outlets that specialize in cleaning supplies. Dust mop treatment chemical extends your mop's life and keeps the mop from streaking on your flooring.

    Precleaning

    • Shake your dust mop thoroughly after each use and before cleaning it and spraying on a chemical treatment. Shaking removes loose dust and dirt from the mop and keeps the mop's fibers loose. If necessary, sweep your dust mop with a stiff broom to remove any caked-on debris from its fibers. To keep dust to a minimum in your home, shake your dust mop outdoors and sweep up any loose debris onto a dustpan for disposal in a trashcan.

    Washing

    • It is safe to wash your dust mop in your washing machine. Remove the mop from its metal or wooden pole and frame, then place it in the washing machine along with any dirty rags you have. Add regular laundry detergent and set the machine to a regular cycle. Dry the mop by hanging it outdoors or in the dryer on a "Low" setting.

    Storage

    • Store your dust mop and its treatment chemical in a closet with your broom and other cleaning supplies. Leave the mop in its airtight plastic bag until you are ready to use it -- this keeps the mop clean and treated. Change the bag if it becomes torn or damaged.
