How to Remove a Foul Smell From the Fridge

A foul smell in a refrigerator is usually an indicator of food spoilage, mold or some type of bacteria. Not only does this make it unpleasant to open the refrigerator, it is also unsafe. Bacteria can spread easily and quickly, and food that is kept in a smelly refrigerator will smell and taste differently. This often leaves the food inedible. If one or two items are causing the odor, the rest of the food can be salvaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from inside the refrigerator. Check everything for spoilage or expiration and discard any food that is no longer good.

    • 2

Pull out any removable pieces such as shelves, drawers and trays. Wash them in hot, soapy water using a standard dish detergent. After washing, rinse with a gallon of water that has one tablespoon of liquid bleach added to it.

    • 3

Mix a handful of baking soda into a pan of hot water until it is dissolved. Use this solution to wipe down the walls and floor of the refrigerator. If baking soda is not available, you can substitute equal amounts of white vinegar and water. Rinse with the bleach and water solution.
