Regular Mops

• A regular mop usually needs a chemical floor cleaner, which are often scented and contain antimicrobial or disinfectant ingredients. When appropriate for the surface, you can use a natural cleaning source like a vinegar-water solution. Regular mops take the form of sponge mops, deck mops, self-twisting mops and dust mops. Dust mops are intended for use on delicate floor surfaces without water or chemicals. Choosing a type of regular mop is a matter of personal preference and budget.

Floor Types

• Before purchasing a steam mop or regular mop, check the manufacturer's directions to ensure the mop type can be safely used on the surface. Some flooring types, like cork, are not suitable for cleaning with a steam mop. Use a regular dust mop for cork.

Considerations

• For steam mops and all types of regular mops, consumers should factor in the cost of replacement parts. If purchasing a steam cleaner seems expensive, over time replacing the heads on a regular mop will be equivalent.
