How to Make a Cleaner for My AC

A properly installed and maintained air conditioner should be able to keep your home at a consistent temperature on even the hottest of days. If you find the temperature inside your home is rising even when you turn the AC up to high, the problem could be as simple as dirty condenser coils. Clean the coils with items you likely already have around the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 16 oz. of baking soda and 16 oz. of dishwashing liquid or liquid soap in a plastic container. Stir until the mixture has a thick, paste-like consistency.

Shut down the air conditioner and unplug it. Remove the grill vent plate from the unit and set it aside. Use a damp cloth to wipe the dust off the air conditioner coils.

Dip a stiff-bristled paintbrush into your homemade cleaning solution and use it to brush the coils and remove any debris. An old hairbrush works well for brushing surface dirt and lint off the fins, recommends the website Saturn Resource Management.

Scrub the coils until they are clean, occasionally re-dipping the brush in the solution. Rinse off the solution by spraying down the coils with the garden hose.
