How to Adjust a Dyson Vacuum for Different Carpets

Carpets come in a variety of styles and pile height. Vacuuming the carpet effectively requires that you match the setting on your cleaner to the appropriate height for the carpet. Dyson vacuum cleaners do not come with specific height settings. The upright cleaners have one setting for bare floors and another for carpets. The canister Dyson vacuums have one setting for carpeting as well as a way to decrease the suction for longer pile carpets and rugs.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the brush control switch on the left side of the Dyson vacuum cleaner's cleaning head.

    • 2

Rotate the control switch toward the front of the cleaning head, from the bare floor setting to the carpet setting. The bare floor setting restricts the brush roll while the carpet setting allows the brush roll to spin.

    • 3

Step on the right side of the Dyson's cleaning head and pull the handle backwards. Turn on the power switch located in the front-middle of the cleaner's handle.

    • 4

Adjust the suction of the Dyson upright and canister vacuum by pulling the suction control valve. The valve is located on the control arm handle where your fingers rest.

    • 5

Open the valve slowly while vacuuming until the suction level makes it easier to push and pull the cleaner. Use your discretion to determine the proper suction level for your carpet pile height.
