How to Adjust the Power Drive on a Kirby G6

One of the signature features of Kirby vacuums manufactured after 1990 is the addition of the tech or power drive, which acts as a transmission. The power drive not only makes it easier to vacuum, but also to move the machine from place to place. The G6 is one of the most popular Kirby models, produced from 1999 to 2001. Kirby vacuums are not available for purchase from stores or other retail outlets; they are marketed exclusively via door-to-door sales. Learning to adjust the power drive on this model can make using the appliance easier and more enjoyable.

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the back of the vacuum cleaner; find the lever near the bottom, directly in the center. The lever should be yellow on one side.

    • 2

Turn on the vacuum cleaner and adjust the height of the head to the appropriate position. The height of the head is adjusted via the step-on push button on the front left side of the vacuum. The head is adjusted to the correct level when the tone of the vacuum machine changes.

    • 3

Push the yellow end of the lever with your foot to engage the automatic transmission. This will make the vacuum cleaner self-propel with just a small amount of pressure on the handle. When you have finished vacuuming, push the step-on pedal to lift the vacuum head. Then, turn off the power and push the gray side of the transmission lever to return the G6 to manual transmission.
