How to Make a Deep Freezer Smell Better

Deep freezers allow you to store food conveniently when you need more space, but they often develop odors over time. When food spills in the freezer or if the electricity goes out, the food often spoils and a foul odor develops. Cleaning the deep freezer helps remove the culprit of the smell. After you clean the freezer, you can focus on freshening and deodorizing the appliance.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all the items from the deep freezer. Look at the food packages and discard anything that appears spoiled. A foul odor, odd discoloration or mold indicates spoilage. Store the items in another freezer or a cooler filled with ice.

    • 2

Unplug the deep freezer before you clean it. If the freezer has a defrost setting, allow it to defrost completely before you unplug it.

    • 3

Remove all the shelves, racks and containers from inside the deep freezer. Wash the removable pieces in the sink with nine parts warm water to one part bleach to kill any bacteria.

    • 4

Dissolve 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 quart of warm water. Wipe the interior of the freezer with the solution. Dry the freezer with paper towels or clean towels.

    • 5

Leave the deep freezer door open to let the air circulate. Open any windows or turn on fans to help the airflow.

    • 6

Combine 1 cup of vinegar with 1 gallon of warm water if the smell remains. Wipe the interior of the freezer with the solution. You may also combine 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach with 1 gallon of water. Rinse both solutions from the freezer thoroughly and dry the excess moisture with a towel.

Spread activated charcoal in shallow pans. Place the charcoal in the deep freezer and plug the appliance into the wall. If you do not have activated charcoal, spread baking soda or coffee grounds onto the shallow baking pans. Remove these substances after they soak up any remaining odors.
