How to Make My Washing Machine Smell Better

When your washing machine begins to develop an unpleasant odor, it can quickly turn into more than an annoying problem --the odors can attach themselves to the clothing you launder in the washer and fill your home with the nose-wrinkling smell. Typically, odors from the washing machine are the cause of fungus --such as mold or mildew -- growing in the washer. The dark, humid and damp conditions inside the washing machine encourage fungus growth. After you have removed the odors from the washer, take steps to prevent them from returning.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the washing machine to the hottest water temperature setting. Pour 2 cups of chlorine bleach into the washer drum as it begins to fill with water.

    • 2

Close the lid, and allow the washing machine complete the full cycle. The bleach will kill mold, mildew and bacteria growing in the washing machine.

    • 3

Turn the washing machine to a lukewarm water temperature, and then add 2 cups of white vinegar. The vinegar will remove odors trapped in the washer. Let the washing machine finish the complete cycle.

    • 4

Leave the washing machine lid open when not using. This will help lower the humidity inside the washing machine while allowing the drum to dry.

    • 5

Refrain from leaving damp clothing to sit inside the washing machine. Doing so will increase the risk of fungus growth in the washer and on the clothing.
