How to Fix a Washing Machine That Won't Drain During the Spin Cycle

Washing machines are just like any other appliance in that they require proper maintenance and cleaning to keep running the way they should. However, even proper maintenance can't keep them from malfunctioning on occasion. Sometimes, something causes the machine to not drain properly during the spin cycle. When this happens, you may be able to repair it yourself instead of calling someone to come and fix it for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that the machine is set on the correct cycle for the type of clothes you are washing. Washing machines often spin slower on the "Delicate" cycle. If you have it set for this type of cycle and you have heavier fabric, the machine may not drain properly during the spin cycle.

    • 2

Wash at least two to three items per load. If you only wash one item, such as a bedspread or blanket, then the washing machine may become unbalanced and won't spin correctly, or it may lower the spin speed to compensate.

    • 3

Check for excessive amounts of soap suds in the washing drum. Many washing machines now require high efficiency (HE) detergents; if this is the case for your model, other types of detergent may produce too many suds for the machine to handle. To compensate for the excessive suds, the machine will spin at a slower speed, resulting in clothes that are still too wet for the dryer.

Examine the drainpipe and make sure it is not less than 30 inches but no more than 96 inches from the floor. If it isn't between these two measurements, it may not properly pump out the water from the washing machine. Moreover, the water could flow back through the pipe into the machine.

Check the drain hose for any signs of clogs. Stretch out the hose to allow water to flow more freely and attempt to remove any blocks that you find. You should also check the utility sink for any clogs that may be on that end.
