How to Care for a Cast-Iron Teapot

Cast-iron teapots are used for some of the same reasons people prefer cast-iron cookware. They heat evenly and, when seasoned after repeated use, the tea tastes better than when made in a ceramic or glass pot. Making tea in cast-iron teapots is the tradition in Japan, reaching back centuries. Today's cast-iron teapots typically have an enamel coating on the inside so caring for them is a bit different than caring for cast-iron cookware.

Instructions

    • 1

Season the teapot before using it for the first time. Place it over a burner on the stove, boil water in it, then pour out the water. If you detect an odor in the pot, boil it again using tea instead of water.

    • 2

Allow the pot to cool completely before cleaning.

    • 3

Pour the liquid out of the pot when you've finished using it. Rinse with clean water and allow it to dry with the top off.

    • 4

Polish the outside of the teapot with a soft, barely damp cloth.

    • 5

Remove rust with a soft brush such as a baby's toothbrush. Fill the cast-iron teapot with used tea leaves and pour boiling water over them. Allow the leaves to soak for 20 minutes, pour out the leaves and rinse the pot.
