Natural Steam Cleaner Carpet Solutions

Carpets can trap dirt and allergens that can affect the air quality of your home. Steam cleaning your carpets is critical to maintaining a healthy home, but commercial cleaners introduce chemicals that can cause reactions as well. For a natural carpet cleaning solution, choose ammonia, vinegar or simply hot water.
  1. White Vinegar

    • Mix white vinegar and hot water to create a natural steam cleaner for your carpet. The acetic acid in the vinegar solution will remove odors and most stains. Tough stains can be removed by applying a paste of baking soda and water and then dousing with a vinegar solution. Let the paste dry on the stain and then vacuum the residue.

    Ammonia

    • Lemon-scented ammonia is an excellent natural substitute for commercial carpet cleaner solutions. Be sure to keep the windows open while you clean and test the ammonia solution on an inconspicuous place first.

    Hot Water

    • Soap residue collects dirt. You can avoid this by simply cleaning your carpets with extremely hot water. Pour club soda on any stubborn stains and blot them with a dry towel.

    Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solution

    • Your own natural carpet cleaning solution is a cheaper option than expensive commercial cleaners. Mix 3 teaspoons of dishwashing liquid, 1/4 cup of ammonia, and 1/4 cup of vinegar to two gallons of water. Be sure not to use a moisturizing dishwashing liquid, as the lotion in it will leave a residue on your carpets.
