How to Keep Grates on a Gas Cooktop Looking Like New

With each use, grates on gas cooktops are vulnerable to food splatters and spills. Neglecting to clean gas cooktop grates on a regular bases allows splatters and spills to become burnt-on, making the grates more challenging to clean. Dirty grates containing burnt-on food also exude foul odors when gas burners are in use. Because dirty gas grates are foul smelling and visually unappealing, wash them daily using basic techniques. Proper care for gas grates will help to keep them looking new.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-tsp. grease fighting dish soap
  • Basin
  • Nonabrasive pad
  • Baking soda
  • Dishtowel

Instructions

      Allow the gas grates to fully cool.

      Squirt 1/2 tsp. grease fighting dish soap into a basin. Fill the basin with fresh, warm water.

      Immerse a soiled grate in the sudsy water. Scrub the entire grate until as much food debris as possible has been loosened.

      Coat the nonabrasive pad liberally with baking soda if cooked-on residue remains stuck to the grate. Using the pad, scrub the lingering grime off the grate.

      Rinse the entire grate thoroughly in fresh, warm water. Wipe moisture off the grate using a dishtowel.

      Repeat the entire cleaning procedure on each remaining soiled grate.
