How to Get Lingering Smells Out of a Fridge

Opening a refrigerator that smells bad inside can kill even the biggest appetite. From foods with pungent smells to spills, odors become trapped within the confines of the refrigerator, making an unpleasant smell when you open the door. If the source of the odor has been removed but the smell persists, it’s time to take a different approach. A thorough cleaning of the refrigerator is an effective way to get rid of unpleasant odors.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid dish soap
  • Sponge
  • Baking soda
  • Cookie sheet or baking pan
  • Aluminum foil
  • Activated charcoal

      Take everything out of the refrigerator.

      Mix 2 tsp. liquid dish soap into 1 qt. of warm water. Use a sponge and the soap solution to scrub the inside of the refrigerator. Remove shelves and drawers for easier cleaning.

      Rinse the fridge with a clean cloth or sponge and a solution of 1 cup baking soda dissolved into 1 gallon of warm water.

      Leave the door open and allow the fridge to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.

      Line a cookie sheet or baking pan with aluminum foil.

      Sprinkle activated charcoal over the foil in a thin layer, and place it into the refrigerator. Place the food back into the refrigerator as well. Do not set food on the activated charcoal.

      Leave the activated charcoal in the fridge at least six hours.
